Cherenzia provided engineering services to Dunes Park, Inc., a seaside 69-unit trailer park and concession stand located on Atlantic Avenue in Westerly, RI. The project consisted of permitting through the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) for a denitrification type of Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) with a total design flow of 17,360 gallons per day, a new water main and underground utilities. Challenges facing the design team included the proximity of the coastal features, a high groundwater table, limited area availability for a new OWTS, and coordination with existing utility and trailer locations.

Location: Bluff Avenue, Westerly, RI

Cherenzia provided engineering services to Bluff Avenue, LLC in support of redevelopment of the historic Ocean House Hotel in the Watch Hill area of Westerly, long regarded as an exclusive summer resort area. Of the many once existent hotels, the Victorian structure of the Ocean House is all that remained. Set for demolition, the hotel was saved by Bluff Avenue, LLC and scheduled, instead, to be redeveloped, as restoration was not feasible due to the hotel’s age and level of deterioration. The new hotel will include a mix of two-bedroom suites and traditional hotel rooms, together with a replicated central tower, columned porches, the mansard roof and the exterior yellow and white building colors. Challenges facing the team included asbestos present in the former structure and permitting for one of the largest onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) in Rhode Island history. Cherenzia provided the following services supporting Bluff Avenue, LLC:
